ESG reporting will soon affect us all.

ESG reporting is increasingly becoming a key requirement for companies in the EU. The adoption of the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) in December 2022 requires almost all capital market-oriented companies to publish a sustainability report. The content of this report is based on the requirements of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and covers environmental, social and societal issues.  The interaction between the CSRD, ESRS and the EU taxonomy is intended to ensure that companies provide reliable and comparable sustainability information.

Compliance with this reporting obligation is staggered.

  • December 2022: CSRD adopted and transposed into national law by 30 June 2024
  • 1 January 2024: Companies that are already required to report under the NFRD (first-time application of the CSRD)
  • January 2025: Larger companies and groups that are not yet required to report under the NFRD
  • 1 January 2026: capital market-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) optional deferral of first-time application until 2028
